County Red Cross Chapter moving

In 1941, the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross moved into the Parrish House at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Newark, and remained there until 1945. Sixty-five years later, the American Red Cross is moving back to the Church, this time to the first floor of the community hall.

The Chapter's current lease at 165 E. Union St. expires on June 30, 2006. The current building administration has chosen to explore other options with the office space, leaving the Red Cross to find a more suitable location. The St. Mark's Episcopal Church has graciously offered six office spaces on the main floor of the church community hall/office extension on a temporary basis.

While headquartered in the church, the Red Cross will be aggressively looking for a more permanent facility to house the Chapter. The Red Cross will also be launching a Capital Campaign in July to raise funds for this permanent Chapter House. The Caring For The Community, Preparing For The Future campaign will be a 2-3 year undertaking that will enable the Chapter to purchase a building, grow existing programs and services, like blood and health and safety programs, and begin new programs that meet other community needs.

'This is an exciting time for the American Red Cross,' said James Love, Executive Director for the Chapter. Love stated, 'We have a tremendous opportunity to build and grow our services like never before. The Chapter will be asking the Wayne County community to help with this campaign including local corporations, government officials, service groups, and individuals.'
