Pancakes to help Nicaragua With maple syrup season ended, Stan Starkenburg is now ready to flip pancakes and give the public a taste of pure New York maple syrup. Saturday, May 6, a specialty pancake breakfast is planned to raise funds and awareness of the plight of a third-world country. Cultural items from Nicaragua will be on display at the breakfast. The all-you-can-eat breakfast will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 on May 6, at East Palmyra Christian Reformed Church (1/4 mile south of the East Palmyra Fire Dept.) on the Port Gibson Road. Breakfast ($5 adults, $3 children under 10, and $15 family) includes pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea, and juice, and pure New York maple syrup made by the Starkenburgs. Starkenburg, who lives in East Palmyra, is heading up a volunteer group to benefit children in Nicaragua. Their son, Liam, and daughter-in-law, Jessica, live and teach just outside Managua. The pancake breakfast will raise moneys needed for educating children in living in poverty in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America. Most families make less than $2 per day, averaging only $500 per year. Donations toward the work in Nicaragua is appreciated. For more information, contact Stan Starkenburg, 597.5456.
