Happenings
By Carolyn Adriaansen (926.4436)

We have been chosen by a robin that seems to be intent on getting into our home and garage. It flies into the windows, and I am surprised that it is still able to fly at all.

Please send me your news, I haven't got time to make it all myself!

A group of local folks climbed aboard two 'big' buses on Wednesday for a Mystery Trip. We enjoyed a museum in Buffalo, erected for a Pan American exposition in 1901. Our luncheon was delicious an we were treated to a musical program assembled by local amateurs. The last stop was at a Tuscarora shopping center, museum and trading post. Harry and Jeanne Lewis were our hosts.

History: Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw - piled high with no wood underneath; it was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof - hence the saying, 'It's raining cats and dogs.'

Need to get rid of bugs - the next time you slice a cucumber save the peels and put them in ant routes outside to keep the bugs from entering your house.

School news - May 1939 - Mr. Reynolds took his 8A and 8B science classes down the creek on a field trip looking for specimens to study in class. They were successful in finding a crayfish, six salamanders, several species of eggs, ferns and flowers.

Marion Legion Baseball team's #7 cookbook is fresh off the presses and being sold for $2. This money helps pay for umpires for the home games. Support our young folks!

This is a recipe from this latest Legion cookbook:

Frog Eye Salad

1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 T. flour
2 egg yolks, beaten
1 (15 oz.) can pineapple tidbits
1 (15 oz.) can crushed pineapple
1 cup uncooked acini-de-pepe
3 cups miniature marshmallows
1 (11 oz.) can mandarin oranges, drained
8 oz. whipped topping
1 cup coconut
1 (4 oz.) jar maraschino cherries, drained, chopped

Combine sugar, salt, flour and eggs in medium saucepan. Drain pineapple, reserving I cup juice. Add reserved juice to saucepan; mix well. Cook over low heat until thickened, stirring constantly. Cool. Cook pasta using package directions until just tender; drain. Combine pasta with cooled dressing in bowl; mix well. Chill over night. Pasta will absorb liquid. Add pineapple, marshmallows, mandarin oranges, whipped topping, coconut and cherries. Mix well. Serves 20.
