Red Creek wins at Regional Envirothon

The Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District congratulates Red Creek High School in taking first place for Wayne County at the Central NY Regional Envirothon April 26-27 at the Rogers Environmental Educational Center (DEC) near Sherburne.

The team members were Kelsey Burch, Olivia Durham, Nichole Pudlowski, Matthew Stone, Elizabeth Blomberg and Team Advisor, Joseph Bonanno. A total of 55 teams from Wayne, Cayuga, Onondaga, Chenango, and Madison Counties competed.

The Envirothon is a unique hands-on approach to environmental education that tests the students knowledge in five subjects: soils, aquatics, wildlife, forestry, and current environmental issues.

The team from Red Creek will compete at the State Envirothon at SUNY Oswego May 24-25.

The winner from New York will advance to the Envirothon Competition at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada at the end of July.

The Regional Envirothon Committee would like to thank the following Wayne County sponsors whom without their support this worthwhile event would not be able to happen: Wegmans, Wal-Mart of Newark, Lyons Vet Clinic, Dobbins Drugs, Marshall Farms, Dynalec, Pieters Excavating, Art Graf, Galens Express Lane, Garlock's, Heluva Good Cheese, Lyons National Bank, Motts, Empire Fruit Growers, and Waste Management.

Any school, business or individual who would like more information on the event or wish to make a donation is encouraged to contact the Soil and Water Conservation District at 946.4136.
