Cabaret Night is tonight in Newark

Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra trumpet player Herb Smith will be the guest artist at Cabaret Night on May 6 at Newark High School.

In addition to playing third trumpet with the RPO, Smith, who teaches through the Community Education division at Eastman School of Music, also frequently plays trumpet at jazz clubs in Rochester. Instrumental music teacher Dave Schwind said Smith will be playing with the Ensemble and will be a featured soloist. 'He's a great musician and a great guy. It's fun to have a little different twist on Cabaret Night by having someone who is a fine a musician as Herb play with us.'

The NHS gymnasium will be transformed for the evening to create a 'nightclub atmosphere' with decorations, tables with tablecloths and candlelight. A stage is set up on which the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by NHS vocal music teacher Jean Bendix, and Jazz Ensemble, directed by Schwind, perform two musical sets each during the event that features vocal and instrumental soloists.

Student musicians act as the wait staff, serving gourmet desserts like New York-style cheesecake, carrot cake, homemade fruit pies, chocolate cake and beverages. Proceeds from the evening support music scholarships given at graduation to two students who plan to pursue careers in music.

Because seating is limited, please purchase reserve seating in advance at Newark Village Pharmacy, Flowers Unlimited, Community Bank or at the main office at Newark High School.

The price of admission includes beverages and dessert - $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens with a Gold Card. Doors will open for the 6:30 p.m. event at 5:30 p.m.
