Spring Fling and other Fun Things
By Melissa White
Sunday was a great day to be out and about in Wayne County. The Spring Fling was this past weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so if you were really serious about filling up your card and
going for the big prizes, there were a lot of days to do so. Not to mention twenty stores to stroll through. We love coming out and it's fun to be a part of the celebration, taking lots of pictures as we go. (Each year wishing we had saved more money to buy more things.) Each business had unique refreshments for the visitors and many areas participated: Wolcott, Alton, North Rose, Sodus Point, Sodus, Williamson and Ontario.
We stopped by friends' houses as well. We saw Melanie, Jeremy and Donny and stayed a bit to chat. (They were heading to Brockport to take him back to school. One more final to take care of and, from what I've heard, three more papers to finish up.) Melanie reads the column and mentioned she sees we have been to Sodus but didn't stop. Well, this time we did. It was fun to visit with them. (We take turns visiting with the old friends and neighbors. Last time, it was Lill Burkholder's turn and I'm sure she has much more information in her little book than she had the last time.)
We then stopped into My Sister's Side Door. The shop always looks so pretty and looks different every time we go in to visit. The fresh flowers in the refrigerator looked so 'springy' and there is always the large assortment of candle types and scents. The shop has many types of vintage bottles and jars and many types of jewelry. The necklaces seemed to be hanging on 'side doors' with glass knobs. We had the chance to talk about fun summer memories and memories of going to the drive-in. It was fun to watch them reminisce together. While we were there, we picked up our stamp card showing us which stores were participating. The cards were beautifully done, made into a fold-up brochure with colored pictures and information about each store.
We didn't get to go to all of the stores that were a part of the Fling, but the ones we didn't, we tried to stop by and take photos. Grandpa's looked really nice with quite an assortment of beautiful plants for people to buy and landscape their yards with. (I kept looking at the building. Is it just me, or did they move it over to the left hand side of the lot?)
We drove past Lukac's Pottery Shop and, of course, you can't go to Sodus Point without seeing the water. It was a pretty aqua color. As we watched the waves gently splash against the shore and the sea gulls soaring down from above, many pictures were taken of people going for walks, kids playing in the sand and on the playground enjoying the wonderful, sunny weather. We also took a ride to see the many gardens of spring flowers at people's homes and the Bed and Breakfast with the cute little Mary Quite Contrary watering her garden.
It was a wonderful sunny day and the Spring Fling was a fun way to enjoy it. Now, since it has just started to get warm I hate to mention the 'w' word, but mark your calendars for the Winter Wonderland Fling on November 3, 4 and 5. It's a great opportunity to find unique gifts for Christmas for loved ones and friends.
