Pittsburgh choir will sing in Newark

May 20 at 7:30 p.m., a special musical event will take place at Newark First United Methodist Church. The Oakland Girls Choir of Pittsburgh, PA will present 'We Will Praise You,' a concert of sacred and secular songs by Vivaldi, Praetorius, Byrd and others, along with songs in Zulu, Hebrew, Latin, Serbian and English.

The OGC is a chamber music ensemble which began in the fall of 2005. Its mission is to provide an opportunity for girls aged 10-18 to experience the joy of singing in community and to share the beauty of choral music through performance.

Through its commitment to excellence in vocal technique, rigorous rehearsals, and vocal artistry, the choir is able to perform some of the worlds best classical and multi-cultural music in a manner that satisfies and impresses its audiences.

The sixteen voice ensemble includes girls from eight schools and seven boroughs through Pittsburgh. The choir is organized and directed by Kathryn (Walters) Barnard, formerly of Newark. Ms. Barnard is a graduate of the music and piano performance program at Concordia College and the music graduate school at the University of Texas, Austin. She teaches a large number of piano students in her studio in Pittsburgh.

The OGC is a non-profit organization supported by a generous anonymous grant, fundraisers, and free will offerings. This musical concert is free and open to the public (a freewill offering will be taken to help offset the choir's travel costs). A reception for the audience and choir will be hosted by Newark FUMC following the performance.
