Piano recital and history at Lyons H.S. Nicholas Brown, a senior at Lyons High School, will be performing a piano recital, American Music of the 20's and 30's, in the Earl Buchanan Auditorium at the Lyons High School on Tuesday, May 23, at 7. The public is invited to attend. Selections will include Tea for Two, Stormy Weather, and Ain't Misbehavin'. Lyons Alum, vocalist Danielle Ellis, will join Nick in performing some of their favorite Gershwin melodies. Also performing with Nick will be Jacob Gardner, tenor saxophone; Stephen Haynes, drum set; and Aaron DeVries, electric bass. A brief history of the school's 1909 Steinway piano and of the composers being represented will be intermingled in the program. During the intermission and following the recital, the audience will have the opportunity to sample delicious desserts prepared by Sharon Lubitow and an opportunity to take a closer look at the Steinway. Brown, currently a senior at Lyons High, has been playing piano since he was thirteen. Although he only took formal lessons for three years, he has continued studying on his own, and has been a member of the Lyons High School Jazz Band for the past two years. Many community members are familiar with Nick's piano accomplishments including a short appearance as the pianist in last year's musical, Leader of the Pack, and as the sole accompanist in this year's musical, Bye, Bye Birdie. This recital is the culmination of an independent study that included beginning to research the Steinway's history and current condition. It is Nick's desire, that as he graduates from Lyons High, he leaves behind a community awareness of the exceptional quality of this 1909 Steinway piano and a plan to maintain it. Although the recital is free and open to the public, a free-will donation will be taken, with proceeds going toward the repair of the Steinway. Donations will also be accepted during intermission and after the program. Copyright
