Relay for Life June 2-3 in Palmyra The 9th Relay for Life of Wayne County will be June 2-3 at the Fairgrounds in Palmyra. This is one of the largest fundraisers for the American Cancer Society. Friday at 6 p.m. is the Cancer Survivor Reception. If you are a cancer survivor or currently undergoing treatment for a cancer diagnosis you are invited to the RFL Survivor Reception. Start the event with appetizers, music, uplifting conversations and a gift from the American Cancer Society. To RSVP call Sheri Lake at 589.7960. Opening ceremony begins at 7 p.m. Cancer survivors take the first lap around the track (help is available for those not able to complete a lap); this officially starts the Relay. After the survivor lap, caregivers (people helping people diagnosed with cancer) take the track with the survivors. Many survivors and caregivers walk hand-in-hand through this emotional journey. Then the 'whole team lap' is a fun lap with everyone participating in the Relay, to take the track, make up team signs and have fun! Miss Relay Competition ... 8 p.m. During this competition, men and boys, while dressed like women/girls, go around the fairgrounds to raise dollars (votes). The individual with the most votes win the 'Ms. Relay' crown. * 10 p.m.: Luminaria Ceremony ... the most moving part of the event. Do not miss this ceremony. Candles are purchased prior to the event 'in honor of' or 'in memory of' someone touched by cancer. During the ceremony, these candles are lit. This beautifully moving ceremony accompanied by hopeful music and reflection. * 5 a.m. June 3: Western Bingo; closing ceremonies follow at 9:30. Teams (8-16 people) take turns walking or running around the track for the duration of the event. There is a $10 per person registration fee to help cover the cost of the event T-shirts and some of the awards that are given throughout the night. * Your entire team does not have to stay the entire night. * Teams of youths under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Smoking and alcohol are prohibited at the event. To learn more and to sign up, call Robin Ferrin at 585.314.0288 or phone the American Cancer Society at 800.ACS.2345. Copyright
