Apply early for grants for arts and culture Funding and grants are available for individual artists and nonprofits through Finger Lakes Arts Grants & Services, administrators of the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Grant (FLAGS DEC) Program. Nancy Newland, FLAGS DEC Coordinator, announced that funds are available for individual artists and nonprofits in Cayuga, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates Counties. Application forms and guidelines are available by attend any of the upcoming FLAGS DEC seminars, on-line at or by calling 315.781.7725. FLAGS DEC seminars will be offered in the 5 county regions from May-August 2006. The FLAGS DEC grant application deadline is Monday, September 11, at 5 p.m. To be eligible an artist, cultural group, or non-profit organization must reside in one of the five counties. Eligible groups for all arts discipline (music, film, theatre, dance, crafts, visual arts, etc.) can apply for $500-$5000 grants support work of community based organizations and artists in providing arts and cultural activities on a local neighborhood basis. Awarded projects must take place between January 1 and December 31, 2007. The goals of the FLAGS DEC grant program include: providing quality arts programming to the 5-county area; assisting emerging arts organizations; supporting cultural expressions of our diverse ethnic groups; and making arts programming accessible to under-served and minority audiences. Emphasis in funding is placed on arts projects and activities geared toward reaching under served communities. Grant funding generally supports artist fees and/or technical production fees. Those interested in applying for a grant are required to attend a DEC seminar at any one of the locations throughout the 5 counties. FLAGS welcomes artist-initiated projects, first time or emerging organizations, as well as past and current participants. Seminars are planned:
