New attraction at Lyons VFW
By Donna Comella

monumentKevin Black began work yesterday on a military 'monument' created from a doomed tree.

His first day of work at the Lyons VFW on Route 14 south he says is an opportunity. His 3-year career in chainsaw sculpture has been mostly in animals - deer, bears and eagles. The maple tree he carves in Lyons he estimates will take 3 to 4 days to complete and he is using photographs and his own image as a guide.

The VFW, knowing that the tree must be removed before it ruined the adjacent sidewalk, researched the Internet to find Black in Tyrone, NY and called him to him to do the work.

Black, whose father was a Viet Nam veteran, says he hopes the 'larger than life-size' monument will do the VFW proud. You can contact Black by cellphone at 336.693.6918.
