Wind-whipped fire scorches Iroquois Hotel

Iroquois Hotel fireA call was received at 911 in Wayne County at 10:58 a.m. today, for flames shooting out of the Iroquois Hotel in Lyons.

The old hotel was built during the railroad's heyday in the 1800s. Lyons Fire Chief Charles Witt says the building is not destroyed, but 16 tenants are not able to stay there and are being helped by the American Red Cross.

Iroquois Hotel fire Witt believes the fire was accidental, perhaps electrical, and started in the wall in an apartment on the third floor. The cause and origin team was still on scene at 2 p.m. today.

A strong wind from the west was an issue, because the fire was on the west side of the structure.

Iroquois Hotel fire Responding to the fire scene were about 25 firefighters from Lyons, Newark and Geneva; Oaks Corners firemen stood by in the Lyons Fire Hall. Lyons firefighters were back in their hall around 2 p.m.
