History of Lyons restaurants

The public is invited to attend a free lecture on Lyons history that will be held at the Lyons Community Center (9 Manhattan Street Ext.) on November 20 at 1 p.m. The title of this Lyons Civic Club sponsored lecture, is 'Lyons Restaurants.' The presenter is author and historical lecturer Andrea Evangelist.

Harry C. VanPatten built the Crescent Tea Room, located west of Lyons on what is now called Old Newark Road, in May 1925. Starting as a small gas station, the Crescent Tea Room was enlarged and improved until it was recognized as one of the most attractive establishments of that type in the area

The restaurant was noted for its good food and pleasant atmosphere. Light lunches and special dinners were served daily in a room that held comfortable wicker furniture, well arranged serving tables, radio entertainment and a Gobel electric entertainer and electric ventilation.

By 1931, three large, well located and homey cabins were available for overnight stay for traveling guests. The rooms were reported to be filled with fresh country air, had immaculate linen on the beds and provided guests with a quiet and restful environment.

Other restaurants that will be discussed are the Seval Inn, Mac's Grill, Pierce's Restaurant, Soda Spa, LaCantina, BridgeTavern, Trombino's By The Park Restaurant, Willard's, Petrus's Restaurant and others. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, call Sharon Lubitow 946.3367.
