Camped out at Wal-Mart for PlayStation 3

Anxious customers queued up at Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores across the country Wednesday and Thursday, as major retailers were getting confirmation of how many of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 consoles they'd receive for the Nov. 17 launch.

These seven people stayed outdoors, overnight from Nov. 15-16 at Newark Wal-Mart. Photos were taken around noon, just 12 hours before the new PlayStation 3 went on sale.

They arrived Tuesday and Wednesday, to line up for purchase of the new PlayStation 3. These folks hail from Newark and Palmyra,  Chili, Perinton, Gananda and Webster.

During the day Thursday, while it rained frequently and quite hard, they were indoors, reading, chatting, sleeping and waiting.

Wal-Mart had only six items to sell and was planning to issue six rain-checks, shortly after midnight.

Newark's store did not close at 10 p.m. Thursday, as it would normally do. The PlayStation 3, ranging from $499 to $599, will be one of the most powerful gaming systems ever created.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. posted an 11.5 percent rise in quarterly profit on Nov. 14, helped by strength in its international business. The company says discounts will drive their holiday sales. (Story and photos by Sandra Marcano)
