Governor announces Canal Greenway Grants

Governor George E. Pataki announced 54 Erie Canal Greenway grants totaling nearly $8.4 million for capital projects that enhance and promote tourism, recreation, historic interpretation, and community revitalization in 19 counties.

The New York State Thruway Authority/Canal Corporation Board approved these grants at a meeting Nov. 17 in Albany.

'For more than 180 years, the New York State Canal System has served as a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity,' Governor Pataki said. 'As a commercial waterway, it helped fuel the westward expansion of our nation, and today, our Canal System is being redefined as a vibrant and thriving recreational and tourism destination. These grants will enable local communities to capitalize on this tremendous resource to encourage new development, create new jobs and improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers.'

The Erie Canal Greenway Grant Program, administered by the Canal Corporation, was created this year to help spur community revitalization along the 524-mile Canal System.

The recommendations were delivered in a report to the Governor in December 2005. The complete report is available on the Canal Corporation's website.
