Old Lyons Taverns and hotels You are invited to attend a free lecture on Lyons history that will be held at the Lyons Community Center (9 Manhattan Street Ext.) on October 16 at 1 p.m. The title of this Lyons Civic Club sponsored lecture, is 'Taverns and Hotels.' The presenter is author and historical lecturer Sharon Lubitow. John Riggs's farmhouse was the first tavern in Lyons. Opened to accommodate newcomers in 1800, it was located on the northeast corner of William and Montezuma Streets. In 1821 the structure was torn down and a hotel was rebuilt on its site. Both taverns and hotels were deemed necessary to accommodate the needs and desires of travelers who were expected when travel on the Erie Canal opened. Other taverns and hotels that will be discussed are Price's Tavern, Joppa House, Landon Hotel, The Patton House, the Graham House, the Wayne Hotel, Exchange Hotel, and the Baltzel Hotel. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, call Lubitow at 946.3367.
