'Greater Tuna' on stage at NHS

Greater Tuna isn't a play about a good kind of canned fish, but about the lives of some small-minded folks living in Tuna, Texas.

Director Steve Duprey says Greater Tuna, to be presented by the Newark High School Drama Club October 13-15 in the NHS auditorium, is a fast-paced, hilarious satire that tackles, in a funny way, some hard-hitting issues like censorship.

'I think everybody who comes to the shows will laugh, and laugh and laugh,' Duprey said. He chose the play, written by Joe Sears and Jaston Williams, because it hasn't been done in high schools in this area.

When it is done professionally, two male actors typically portray the 20 different characters. But Duprey has assigned the roles to a cast of 16, with four of the cast members, C.J. Edmonds, Scooter Rosenthal and Joe Sullivan, who are juniors, and Evan VanKouwenberg, a freshman, playing two roles each.

Other cast members include: seniors Mike Wildey, Spencer Stivers, Susannah Hallagan, Mike Chase, Geoff Nassimos, Anne Monahan and Mark Chamberlin; juniors Claire Walton, Sebastian Culbertson, and Mary Timerson; sophomores Chris Martin and Alex Nassimos.

Assisting with the production: Marc Jeanette, technology teacher, supervising set design; Nellie Colarocco, teacher assistant, who is doing costumes; cosmetology teacher Kara Rusco and her class are doing makeup and hairstyles; senior Lisa VerPlank is the stage manager; senior Sid Pruitt is handling lighting; Carol Rosenthal is doing publicity and photography; art teacher Rene Bailey and her class helped with the poster layout.

Performances Oct. 13 and 14 will be at 8 p.m. and at 2 p.m. Oct. 15. Tickets are $6 at the door.
