Happenings October 7, 1911: The women employed by the Wayne County Canning Co. had a few days vacation last week while the machinery was being changed for the apple canning season. They will now have steady employment until after the holidays. America's first apple tree was planted in 1674 by Peter Stuyvesant in his Manhattan orchard. I received a phone call from Sue (Bliek) Stresing in Mentor, Ohio. She was in town last weekend and called to say how much she and her school friends enjoyed their visit to our museum. They liked old scrapbooks (where they found pictures of themselves). Vince and Kathy Beltrone went to Wilmington, NC to visit the grandparents of Ali, Zak and McKenzie. Sunny weather and 86 degrees! The United Church of Marion will hold a Chicken & Biscuits Dinner on Monday, October 23 from 4:30 p.m. until gone. The church is located at 3848 North Main St., Marion. The delicious dinner will feature home-baked pies. Take-outs will be available. Adults $7; Kids ages 5-12 $3.50; under five eat free. I've had some nice comments about the histories of Marion that have been published recently. I'll look up more for future editions. There is a blood drive October 17 at the Legion Home on Witherden Road. There is going to be a change in the collection of Campbell labels in November - get yours collected! The Girl Scouts will be out selling cookies this weekend. Early Marion, October 1939: 'Marion Boy Scouts Win Second Place In Rally Contests.'
