Beautifying Newark Middle School grounds Newark Middle School sixth graders Matt Blair, Saige Salone, Leah Marvin and Brynn Lauer planted flowers October 11. The Newark Middle School campus looked great at the end of day last Wednesday. Students and some staff members spent the day sprucing up the grounds. Undertaken each year since 1986 by the Student Council, Beautification Day this year saw 600 of the students in grades 6-7-8 and some staff members planting flowers, weeding, and or spreading compost or mulch during one of their class periods. Student Council advisors Deb Person, who teaches sixth-grade science, and Tedd VanDuyne, eighth-grade social studies, were the overseers of the ambitious project. The event was supported by the generosity of area businesses including: Hines Horticulture, Wal-Mart, Empire Tree Surgeons and the Newark Department of Public Works. Students really enjoy this opportunity each year to show how much they care about their school, Person said. And with the support of the community, the efforts by students and staff have the Middle School grounds reflecting a wonderful spirit of cooperation and pride of ownership. Copyright
