Spooktacular events at Museum

The Museum of Wayne County History, 21 Butternut Street, Lyons, is raising the dead this October with a series of spooktacular events.

On Thursday, October 19, at 7 p.m., the museum resurrects its 'History at Night' program. Museum educator Erin Gardner will discuss 'El Dia de los Muertos,' or The Day of the Dead. This festival, especially popular in Mexico, is a mix of religious and indigenous traditions. It celebrates the lives of loved ones who have died and involves a variety of startling images. This free presentation will be repeated for 'History at Noon' on November 2.

On Friday, October 20, the Rolling Hills Ghost Hunters will present the findings of their investigations into two reportedly haunted Wayne County structures: the former county jail (now the Museum of Wayne County History) and the Bishop farm. More than a month ago, the Ghost Hunters set up their equipment and investigated each building. What they observed and recorded is sure to surprise. This hour-long presentation begins at 6 p.m. at the beautifully restored Ohmann Theatre, William Street, Lyons. Admission is $10.

The Museum's Haunted History Ghost Walks, created by paranormal investigator Mason Winfield, continue every Friday through the end of October. These 90-minute walking tours detail legend and lore of many haunted buildings in the village of Lyons. Walks take place rain or shine, and walkers take part at their own risk. Tours begin on the steps of the Wayne County Courthouse. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 7-11.

The Museum's Haunted Jail is back this year and scarier than ever! On Friday, October 27, Saturday, October 28, and Sunday, October 29, from 6 to 9 p.m., the old jail cellblocks at the Museum of Wayne County History will be transformed into a frightening trail of terror. Who knows what is lurking behind the cell doors or just around the corner? Those who dare to find out will be treated to cider and donuts at the end of their trip. Cost for a stroll through the haunted jail is $3. Visitors are encouraged to bring friends to have a hand to hold!
