Concert Saturday at NMS The Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of dynamic guest conductor Diego A. Garcia, begins their season with a crisp classical concert on Saturday, Oct. 21. Downbeat is 7 p.m. in the Newark Middle School Auditorium. The program features the powerful Symphony #1 by Beethoven; well-known selections from the opera Carmen; and an energetic Overture by Russian composer Mikhail Glinka. Diego A. Garcia currently teaches the string program at the Harley School in Rochester and is on the cello faculty at Hochstein Music School and the Eastman Community Music School. The Columbia, South American native began his musical career with piano lessons at the age of five, and progressed to the cello. At 15 he won a position with the Orquesta Sinfonica del Valle, where he performed for six seasons. Garcia received his Bachelor's Degree in music from the Manhattan School of Music in 1998. The award-winning performer has toured Germany, Austria, France, Italy and Central America as a chamber musician, recording artist, orchestral player and soloist. He is known for his work with the Astor String Quartet, which he founded. The group had numerous recording projects, including a CD of favorite Tangos, Latin American and Spanish songs, and sound tracks for several independent films. Most recently Garcia has performed chamber music and lecture recitals as the cellist of Quartsemble, a group he formed with his wife, Karine Stone. Diego joined his wife as co-conductor of the Cobblestone Chamber Orchestra in 2002, and they enjoy conducting and teaching together. Tickets for the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestras Fall Concert are available at the door: $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and children under 12 free.
