Missing Sodus

Buffalo got plenty of the unmentionable stuff the other day and still the kids were able to get out and go to homecoming and visit relatives in other areas. Of course, when mom says, 'You should take your winter jacket,' the kids really should listen. Or, as we saw last week, they spend time in two feet of snow without one. (Sometimes you just give the advise and then sit back and watch the pieces fall.)

People have such nice fall displays out. Everything looks so festive.

Heloise has a cleaning out the pumpkin tip... Cleaning Out Pumpkins

Hate getting pumpkins ready for carving? Make it easy by using an ice cream scoop to remove the inside pulp and seeds faster. Carve and then sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg inside. When you light the candle inside, and it burns, the smell will be wonderful.

(It is the hardest part of the whole Halloween celebration.)

News from Ralph Everydyke, who I thought was in Florida all this time. They are getting a later start this year:

Hi Everyone: We will be heading for the sunny south tomorrow, Tuesday. So please don't send me any more mail until at least Friday. It sounds like we may be traveling thru some rainy weather, but hope it won't be too bad. We will probably take at least 3 days on the road seeing as we are getting so old.

Take care everyone. Ralph

Did you know:

Halloween has gone through many transitions throughout time. It was the ancient Celtic harvest festival of Samhain, which for many signified the end of the harvest year and the beginning of winter. Those traditions were then brought to America by Irish immigrants when the potato crops in Ireland failed. The Irish were descendants of the Celts, and with them came their folk practices, which are the remnants of the Celtic festival observances. Many of the things we do today are seated in those medieval traditions. Dressing up going out in the night to collect treats, jack-o'-lanterns, apple dunking and much more.

October 31: Community Halloween Party: Children 12 and under, in costume and accompanied by an adult, are invited to Blossom View Nursing Home (Maple Ave., Sodus), from 6:30 to 8 pm. There will be 'treats' of cookies, punch, games and CANDY but no 'tricks.' Join for a safe and warm Halloween. Call 315.398.8473 for more information.

At the Sodus Free Library:

As we're picking the last roses of Summer, it's time to take special care of our gardens to help insure healthy, colorful blooms next year. For the October Books-Sandwiched-In, at noon on Thursday, everyone learned from Master Gardener and Rosarian Audrey Ferris who presented 'Putting Your Garden to Bed.'

Oct 21: Cracker Box Palace's 'FALL EXTRAVAGANZA' Noon 'til 5 p.m. Kid's Costume Contest, Pumpkin Art Contest, Pumpkin Chuckin', Apple Bake Off and Auction. Also going on throughout the day, games, scarey story tellers, Psychic readings, farm tours, hay rides, good food & fun!

More Halloween fun at the Kraft Shack

Kids Halloween on Monday October 23 from 6:30-7:30. The kids are going to make a ghost crossing sign. $12 includes all.

Thursday, November 9 join the Kraft Shack for Welcome turkey, 6:30 -9 p.m. Decorate Thanskgiving with this wooden turkey ...easy painting. $17 includes all.

Don't forget all of the fun Halloween books and movies you can borrow from the libraries to help you with the holiday. If it ever stops raining so hard you and the family can go out in search of the perfect pumpkins and, if it just insists upon raining, then it's time for the raingear. The great pumpkins have to be found. There are a lot of fun kits for your great pumpkin when you do find it - everything from paint to carving ideas.

Where did October go? Before we know it, the kids' costumes will be put away and we will be getting ready for the big Thanskgiving dinner. Of course, we have to remember to watch the parade as the turkey is doing his thing.

Have a great week. Go out and enjoy leaf peeping as well as playing in the leaves. When the next column comes out it will be November already. Enjoy the time you have to spend with your families and have a fun and safe Halloween.
