Marion Legion Baseball will hold a Chicken BBQ on September 9 from 10:30 to 5. Pick up a great meal at the South Main Street location. For $7.50 you get 1/2 large BBQ chicken, salt potatoes and choice of cole slaw or macaroni salad, fresh baked Italian bread, butter and pickles. For ticket reservations call 926.7707.

It is time to make plans for the Marion Mile Race. The 10th race will again coincide with Marion's annual Fall Festival. At 9 a.m. September 9, runners of all ages and skills will gather across from the Marion Post Office for the start of another exciting race on the familiar downtown course. This race is designed for the involvement of the whole family.

The moon, which is full on September 2, has a crust made primarily of anorthosite stone. Anorthosite is rare on earth, except atop the Adirondack Mountains.

Sue Stresing had a nice time visiting friends and family in our area. She now lives in Mentor, Ohio.

We've received posters advertising movies being shown at the Colonial Theater in September 1926 - it announces Evelyn Brent in 'Smooth As Satin.' Barb Kaper also sent along info on Marion Dr. - A.S. Russell's 'Hepatic Bitters' and 1908 calendars and other interesting remembrances. Thanks, Barb

On Thursday, Gord and I spent the afternoon at Sodus Point with Barb and Bill DeWandel and their family - the Ballestys and Codys. We enjoyed snacks and a marvelous boat ride around the islands.

(Barb served 'Pimiento Cheese' with crackers before we went on the boat cruise.)

Pimiento Cheese

  • 1 (8 oz.) package shredded sharp Cheddar
  • 1 (8 oz.) package shredded extra-sharp Cheddar
  • 1 (4 oz.) jar pimientos, with juice
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • Salt and pepper

Mix the shredded cheeses together with the pimentos and their juice. Stir in the mayonnaise until well blended. Add salt and pepper, to taste, and stir. Keep covered in the refrigerator until ready to use. It is easier to spread if left on the counter for 30 minutes before serving. Great on bread, celery sticks, or crackers.

Aug. 26, 1909:

The Newark Marion railroad has a new engine weighing 750 tons and can draw a train of two freight cars over any grade without compelling the fireman, conductor and brakeman getting off to push.
