Missing Sodus

Well, it's September. The kids have been working on the last-minute homework the schools sent home and gotten the backpacks all packed up ready for the first day.

The weekend we went out to LeRoy Island, the leaves had a hint of reds and orange at the tops of the trees. But don't feel bad. We all had a great summer, didn't we? Plan some fun things to bring in the fall season. Bring in some of the flowers in the garden like the yellow Black Eyed Susans and orange marigolds for a pretty fall look.

September is a good time to pick apples and Alasa Farms seems like a good candidate as well as The Apple Shed. It's fun to pick your own. I remember years ago going with the kids for our Cups and Saucers group to Sherry List's House and picking apples on her farm, then having cocoa afterwards. It was a lot of fun. And things you do to welcome fall are always remembered by your kids when they grow up.

From the Sodus Free Library:

Congratulations to all of our readers from preschool through 9th grade for reading a total of 32,265 minutes during our six weeks of Summer reading. That is totally amazing! The totals by team were:

  • Diamond Team (1st - 3rd grade) - 10,490 minutes;
  • Sapphire Team (7th - 9th grade) - 8,591 minutes;
  • Ruby Team (Preschool-Kindergarten) - 6,830 minutes;
  • Emerald Team (4th - 6th grade) - 6,354 minutes.

The Diamond Team definitely blew the other age groups away, so today we put all of their Time Trackers into a drawing for the magic kit. It was donated by David Moreland at our Books: A Treasure! kick-off program in July. The 'Classic Mysteries of the Master Magicians' kit includes everything needed to perform over 75 illusions. And the winner is - insert drumroll here - Jair V. Congratulations, Jair! We hope that you enjoyed the programs you attended and the books you read, and hope that you come in to show us some of your magic tricks.

We want everyone to remember that books are full of treasures, so even though you're done keeping track of minutes read (at least until next Summer!), visit us often, check out some great books, and keep reading!

Saturday, September 9 from 4 p.m. is a Chicken Barbecue sponsored by the Lincoln Fire Department, 719 Plank Road, Ontario.

There are a lot of fun and interesting things going on throughout the weekend with a potpouri of places to go see them.

The kids have all gone back to school and you have heard the tales of goals and plans for the whole school year in one paragraph, I'm sure. I miss the days of lots of notes from the teachers. They made you feel more connected. And the days when my kids were little and going on field trips, I think I enjoyed those almost as much as the kids. The bus rides of Stacie Hickson and Amanda Bitter in first grade, going to the zoo and singing all the way there and most of the way back to Sodus school. Going in and baking cookies with Mrs. Manning's class. Walking to the Post Office to see how our mail was delivered. Now, the kids are singing other songs and are going to be Sophmores but, there are other classes coming up, having the same fun field trips and plans for the new school year.

Much as you miss the kids, isn't it nice to get back into the usual routine? When you pick up a room it stays neat for at least a few hours.

Enjoy the week with your families and the stories and adventures they will tell you of their days. It's important to take the extra time when they come home to let them tell you all that has happened during their time away.
