Free lecture on Myron Taylor Home

The public is invited to attend a free lecture on Lyons history that will be held at the Lyons Community Center on Monday, September 18 at 12:05.

The title of this Lyons Civic Club sponsored lecture, is 'The Myron Taylor Home.' The presenter is author and historical lecturer Sharon Lubitow.

Myron Charles Taylor, born in Lyons in 1874, became a U.S. businessman, benefactor and diplomat. He served as the CEO and chairman of the United States Steel Corporation between 1932 and 1938.

He graduated from Cornell University in 1894 and donated money to build Myron C. Taylor Hall where the Cornell Law School now exists. He also donated money to the Lyons Community Hospital, all the Lyons churches, and left his Broad Street home to Lyons to be used as a community center.

After his death in 1959, Myron Taylor's New York City home was sold to developer George Engler for $1,300,000. Taylor lived in the 40-room, 16 East Seventieth Street baronial home from 1939-1950. Before the home was razed, the contents, including the tiles from the ceiling and the woodwork, were auctioned off, bringing in $750,000. The furniture and Taylor's personal possessions were sold in a separate auction.

Pre-registration is required. Call 946.3367.
