Newark gas leak on West Ave.

Newark Volunteer firefighters were called to the area of 433 West Avenue at about 10:30 a.m. this morning. A contractor, opening a ditch, severed a gas line resulting in a substantial gas leak.

Firemen immediately ordered the residential block sealed off and the evacuation of eight homes adjacent to the leak.

By 11 a.m., firefighters were waiting for NYSEG to arrive and take control.

A NAVA ambulance crew was standing by at the scene.
