Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

I hope everyone had a nice Easter. Oscar certainly did and he has driven everyone nuts ever since. Not because he enjoyed Easter itself, but he loves the little Frisbees that I gave him. Between the Frisbees and the small plastic Easter eggs, he's in heaven and we have to hide them so we don't have to play fetch.

The sun is out and at least we aren't battling snow, but we can't speak to quickly because, around here, you just never know.

From the Green House:

One of the most wonderful places to be during this cold and gloomy weather is a nursery or greenhouse. Everything is so alive. But one thing to remember, is that Easter plants are just that -plants that are forced to bloom for the holiday. They are like the florist plants and not as hardy as the plants you will find during planting season. Enjoy them in the house, but unlike the other plants, they will not be ready to face the weather until it warms up. Azaleas that are forced can be planted when the weather warms up but, chances are, they will not flower again. You will have the bush, but not the flowers. Always fun to try though and see what happens. I tend to experiment a lot in my garden. What do you have to lose?

Treat the forced plants as you would an annual. With your mums - they may or may not come back next year, but they will look nice this year in the garden. The pansies are waiting to be picked up and planted soon. They like colder weather and seem to die back when it's too hot, then come back sometimes in the fall. Enjoy your Easter plants, and on a gloomy day just wander through your neighborhood greenhouse. You'll be amazed how uplifting the trip can be. Spring isn't outside yet, but it is all around you in some places.

A fun book sandwiched in at the Sodus Free Library:

The Friends of the Sodus Free Library's popular Books-Sandwiched-In series continues at noon on Tuesday, April 17 , with a presentation on 'New Perennials for 2007,' by Grandpa's Nursery & Gardens, Inc. Because space is limited, reservations are required. The $3 fee includes a sandwich, beverage, and dessert. Call the Library (483.9292) or stop by at 17 Maple Avenue to reserve your spot.

Our Story Hour children loved making their paper bag Easter baskets with Mrs. Koch on Monday. And she even brought the grass and candy to fill them - Yummy!

flowers I gave Oscar a bath this week, and he just grew. He went from tiny to massive fluff. Of course, it was not easy. He doesn't like baths and tried to escape from the kitchen sink along the top of the cabinet.

Happy April b-days to Rachel White April 22; Amber Malone April 14; Michelle Trembley April 12.

If you have birthdays or special events you'd like to see added to the column, please send them along.

Everyone likes to see their name in print.

Enjoy your week and each other's company. Hopefully, the warm weather will come back and we can all get outside again.
