Canal Clean Sweep in Lyons Saturday Canal Clean Sweep is for residents along the entire Canal System to "clean up" a portion of the Canal. I've attached a picture of my Dad taken last year during Canal Sweep. He had no idea the area he was cleaning up would be named after him. Saturday we will be cleaning up G. Winston Dobbins Park. We're looking for volunteers to bring wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels and branch nippers. Depending on the weather, we will be receiving loads of topsoil to spread over the entire park area. The park also has the original Erie Canal next to it. Unfortunately, it has shrubs, vines and other types of weeds that cover the edges, and the park cannot be seen during the summer. Let's showcase what made Lyons what it is today. Folks coming over the bridge into Lyons will have a perfect view of the mural, day and night. Depending on the turnout, the area between the two bridges needs a little help. Also, Lock E-56 (a mile and a half west of Lyons) is the only original lock that still has water and the wooden lock doors. That area has already been started, but still needs lots of work. We also will be putting up the framework, which the mural will attach to, on the old trolley bridge abutment. The Mural Mania project, which includes the cleanup of G. Winston Dobbins Park, was one of 63 stories given to New York State Parks and Trails. Out of the 63 stories, the Lyons project was chosen as one of four. The story has been sent out by the state to all media. We have also been given T-shirts for the volunteers. Corky Goss, Arts Professor at Cazenovia College, is coming back again this Saturday to pick out possible mural locations. This is a GREAT opportunity to have our Lyons showcased. Feel free to just show up Saturday, at 9 a.m. Copyright
