Missing Sodus

Oh, my gosh, I think the warmer weather is on the way, but it's not even close to being what it was last year. People are anxious to get on with spring, plant some plants, start taking walks when they won't freeze. For right now, the only plants you can plant are primrose and pansies. There are some really neat herbs around now, so look for cinnamon basil, orange mint, candy mint, apple mint and orange thyme. A word of warning, though - many herbs, especially mints, can be very invasive. I didn't know that when, years ago, I planted the chocolate mint. I loved the smell of it but, once it starts growing in your garden, you can't stop it. They are best used in pots.

News from the Sodus Free Library:

Newest Arrival - an eagle, donated to the Library by SFL Volunteer Bette Bugni, carved by Tom Verdon of Davenport, Iowa. Verdon carved it in the style of the original eagle which, at 7 feet tall, stood guard next to the Town of Sodus Honor Roll sign in May of 1943. The plaque on the original eagle read:

'Erected by the citizens of Sodus Township in grateful recognition of the sacrificial service of these men & women. May, 1943'

Pauline Dodge, Senior Library Clerk, has donated a photo of the original sign and eagle, which we have framed. Thanks to Bette and Pauline for bringing a bit of Sodus history back to life!

Events to look forward to :

  • April 23 - Rock Painting Class 13, 10 a.m.-noon
  • April 23 - Preschool Story Hour, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
  • April 27 - Knitting Class 10, 10 a.m.-noon

Many of us watched the news and the devastating tragedy at the college in Virginia. It is news that touches so many people from so many different areas and affects so many lives. When you listen to the friends, relatives talk about them and when you read about them, you see they were bright, shiny new stars - talented and smart. They are so young to have life taken from them so early. Condolensces to everyone who lost a loved one.

Enjoy your families. Take the extra time to read the bedtime story to the little ones. Enjoy every moment you can be free with those hugs and kisses. You will never regret giving them. Have a good week. Hopefully, it will continue to get warmer and we can leave all that cold and snow behind us.
