'Keeping Children Safe' conference Keeping Children Safe, a conference addressing internet safety and community concerns regarding sexual offenders will be offered on Friday, April 27, at the Quality Inn in Newark. The featured speakers are Pamela Scott Weaver, Director of Community Education for Missing and Exploited Children, New York State branch and Sergeant Steve Sklenar with the Wayne County Sheriffs Department. School personnel, law enforcement and leadership and staff from organizations that who work with youth are encouraged to attend. Participants will learn about the dangers children and teens may encounter online, characteristics of internet predators and victims and how internet safety resources can help prevent online victimization. Free and publicly available interactive resources through the NetSmartz materials and website will be presented. Weaver has a social work background and has presented abduction and sexual abuse prevention safety education programs for over 11 years throughout New York State. These programs include utilizing the NetSmartz Workshop and teaching internet safety to youth, teens, parents, teachers and law enforcement officers. Sgt. Steve Weaver will examine the different levels and risks of sexual offenders and discuss the sexual offender registry. Implications for local communities will be discussed. Keeping children safe is the responsibility of the entire community parents, families and anyone who works with and on behalf of youth.
