Newark youth to fast

Through World Vision's 30 Hour Famine, middle school teens in Newark First United Methodist Church Youth Group will begin their 30-hour 'juice fast' after lunch on April 27 and not eat again until 6:30 p.m. April 28.

This gives the students a real taste of hunger to help feed and care for children living in extreme poverty conditions in over 100 countries in the world both over seas and in the United States due to famine, conflict or crisis situations.

Students will have a time of Bible study and learn about the facts of world hunger. (Did you know that 29,000 children under age five die each day due to poverty and lack of food?)

They will also perform community awareness programs at Save-A-Lot and P&C Foods. They will ask for a $1 donation which is tax deductible and post an impact statement on the lawn of the church for all driving by to see.

Participants are also working at a community service project for the Village of Newark. They'll be picking up litter on a site designated by the village as in need of some extra help.

Students will walk to their destination (like some children have to walk each and every day for their food and medicine, some even as far as six miles). Pledges from generous supporters in and around our community will help them make it feasible to save these children. It takes $360 to save a child for one year. How many can we save?

Stop by and give your support both in prayer and money. Last year these youths went to the Niagara Falls area and raised enough money to save four children.

Youths are NOT too young to make a difference in the world. They will learn that it is not enough to talk about world hunger, but they have been directed by Jesus himself to do something about it. If you would like to learn more about World Vision and their program, you can contact them at
