New gift shop in Sodus Point

Pops House of Country Collectibles is a unique gift shop at 8101 Margaretta Road in Sodus Point.

The shop has two floors overflowing with items in what used to be a family-owned home of over 60 years. In 1941 Dorothy Kraus from Sodus Point and John Herrold of Herndon, Pennsylvania were married. They met while John worked as a carpenter on the Sodus Point Trestle for the Pennsylvania Railroad and Dorothy worked at what is now Martella's Market.

John and Dorothy raised their family and had lots of fun caring for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy died in 1986 and John - 'Pop' - died in 2005. The large family home was put on the market, but it didn't sell.

Daughter Joan Carter, who grew up in the home, and granddaughter Ruth Lennox, who spent lots of her childhood there, came up with the idea for the shop, as a way to keep the home and to work together.

Pop's House has 35 consignors of antiques, collectibles, furniture, candles, primitives, new gifts and homemade craft items. There are also many jewelry items, along with books, specialty foods, nautical items, and a year-round holiday room. You can even purchase a greeting card. The garage also has larger furniture and many other decorative items.

Soup is always bubbling on the stove and the coffee pot is always on. Orders for cookies and pies are welcomed. If you have a sweet tooth, the candy case is always full of different varieties of homemade candy.

The store was opened December 8, which would have been Pop's 90th birthday.

Pop's House is closed Monday and Tuesday, but is open Wednesday-Friday from 11 to 7 and Saturday and Sunday from 11 to 5.
