Students who donate blood may win iPod The American Red Cross Blood Services, New York Penn Region announced August 1-11 as Student Donor Days in the Region. All age-eligible high school or college students (16-19) who donate blood during this time will be automatically entered into a random drawing to win an Apple 2GB iPod nano. If 1,000 units of blood is collected from student donations Region-wide, students also will be automatically entered in a random drawing to win a $1,000 scholarship. In addition, students may enter to win a random drawing for a $1,000 back-to-school shopping spree by redeeming a Points-for-Pints scratch-off card at following their visit. High school and college students are a vital source to help ensuring the community's blood supply. Summer is traditionally a time when blood donations decline by 10 to 15 percent in part, due to the fact that high schools and colleges are on hiatus and account for 20 percent of the blood supply. Students can make appointments at any life saving blood drive by calling 1-800-GIVE- LIFE or visiting Anyone 17 years or older, weighing at least 110 pounds and in general good health may be eligible to donate blood. In New York State, 16-year-olds may donate blood provided they bring an original signed New York State Informed Parental Permission for a 16-Year-Old to Donate Whole Blood to the blood drive.
