Lyons girls were Sports Ambassadors in Holland
Jacquie Wallace and Hayley McUmber

Jacquie Wallace, 16, (left) and Hayley McUmber, 14, attended the Youth Friendship Soccer Games in Holland. They play soccer at Lyons High School. Both girls play summer soccer and indoor soccer together in the off-season.

They were chosen as members of the People to People Sports Ambassador Program, and represented the United States in the Youth Friendship Games in Holland, July 19-29.

The objective of the program, founded by President Eisenhower in 1956, is to promote international understanding while building leadership skills among America's youth. Acceptance into the program is bestowed based on a demonstration of leadership and citizenship, and a desire to learn about diverse cultures and venture into the world in the name of peace, friendship and understanding.

The girls were recommended by their teachers and coaches.

Hayley McUmber is a freshman and has been involved in a leadership program at Lyons. She participated in track, basketball, and played JV Soccer. McUmber scored a goal against the England team. Her team was made up of girls from all over the U.S. They had a 6-0 record before playing the Netherlands.

The girls had a wonderful time, traveling the canals of Amsterdam and playing against other teams from the U.S. and the Netherlands, England and Belgium.

She made lasting friendships with girls from all over the United States, Sweden, Denmark and England. She enjoyed the boat ride around the Amsterdam canals. She also enjoyed taking the bike ride to the wooden shoe factory and cheese factory. She said the trip was a very enriching experience.

The daughter of Patricia and Kevin Wallace is going into her junior year, has been taking advanced math and English courses, ran spring track, and enjoys snowboarding. She plays alto clarinet, bass clarinet and keyboard in the school band, pit band and jazz band, was in the color guard for the marching band, and works at Pizza Hut in Newark and Spanky-Oliver's Ice cream stand in Lyons.

Thrilled by the whole experience, she found the tour of the Anne Frank House to be most interesting. She brought home gifts of chocolate and cheeses to her parents.

They had exceptional coaches, from United States and also were trained by Dutch coaches. They competed and scrimmaged with other US Teams and other countries. Everyone enjoyed the Olympic-style opening ceremonies, with several sports represented.

Wallace said she was 'very proud to be representing the United States of America as they called us out onto the field.'
