Newark teachers win award

In 1995 the New York State United Teachers Representative Assembly passed a resolution establishing an award that recognizes a local's collective and sustained contributions to community service.

Local presidents nominate their local for this recognition by a written description of the locals contributions that have impacted the community.

The following list of items of service by Newark Teachers' Association were submitted:

  • awarded scholarships to graduates pursuing careers in education
  • sponsored safe driver program for new drivers -provided monetary sponsorship of athletic team television broadcasts
  • participated in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
  • participated in United Way Drive
  • supported booster clubs for athletes and musicians with financial contributions
  • supported senior class Operation Graduation with financial contribution
  • supported the high school yearbook with a financial contribution

An impartial committee selected the NTA for this award as a result of the community involvement.

President Patricia Davidson and First Vice President Mary Beth Holgado, Representative Assembly delegates, accepted the award on behalf of the members at the 2007 Representative Assembly.

The Newark Teachers Association continues to take pride in the contributions of its members to the Newark community.
