Missing Sodus

Things are finally getting back to normal. A lot of the college kids are back to school and those of us who are done with the moving are SO HAPPY! It was a rough few days of packing the boxes, packing the cars, the trek to the school, then unpacking and the long drive back. Mine is only in Buffalo, but that is far enough. Now it's all up to them (until the big move back in May and then it begins again).

Labor Day is coming up. There are all kinds of websites and television shows letting you know about fun party ideas and recipes to try so you can have fun for the end of the summer. We hate to see it go, but since we can't stop it from happening, we can have a good time in the celebration.

The Sodus Free Library will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday for Labor Day, so stock up on the movies, DVDs and good books to keep everyone busy. Today (August 31) is the last day to turn in your library BINGO cards from the Summer Reading Program, so don't forget.

Looking for something fun to do Saturday, September 1? A fun family event with music a BBQ, arts, crafts and lots more - sound like what you might be looking for? Then, the Ontario Barn Blue Grass Festival is it. From noon to 8 p.m. on 513 Whitney Rd. in Ontario. Can't ask for more all at one event, can you? Fun, food and family entertainment - sounds like a winner .

On Sunday, you can enjoy the waters and music at Sodus Point from 2 to 4. Listen to the music of Dick Stacy & the Rhythm Aces Big Band. Pack up the kids, the big blanket to sit on, some chairs and you'll be all set for the afternoon. Food is supplied by the Lighthouse Museum then just sit back, relax and enjoy.

A quick Mexican dip for lunch (sounds good).

  • In a glass casserole dish (or something that can go into the oven for a few minutes) is where it is all going to happen.
  • If you like meat in your dip, cook some ground beef. If you like spicy, add some taco seasoning or spices.
  • In the casserole dish, sprayed with cooking spray, add a can of refried beans. Spread them all around the bottom. Top with the hamburger. (If you don't like hamburger added, just do the refried beans. Top with your favorite blend of Mexican cheese, or cheddar and pop in the oven at 350 to just heat up the beans and let the cheese melt. Now it's all up to you and what you want to add - black olives, chopped tomato, chopped onions, salsa, sour cream? Serve the dip on a plate with Nacho chips. For kids, it's easier to have theirs on a plate of their own. (They are more fussy.)

Since we just moved our college student, we are procrastinating about our own moving. The date is September 21 and we don't have one box packed. BUT we do have the boxes, so that's a start. We just aren't in a hurry to have to trip over the boxes that are packed. (And you know the minute you pack something you haven't seen in three years, you need it immediately when it is packed.) We'll get there. There's so much more to moving than just the stuff. There is all of the paperwork and phone calls. Registering at the new school, filling out the change of address cards. There is just so much work involved and we just did it not long ago.

Try to get the kids' school supplies early so you aren't in the stores with a lot of other frantic moms and kids trying to find things. Have fun with it - make it a game. I know it can be rough - I've done it for years. Enjoy your end of summer weekend. Do something fun, even if it's just your own little family. If you don't have a picnic or party to go to, you can still have a good time. Get some movies and set aside a movie day. We always picked Sunday afternoon for game day and Saturday night for movie night. For the older kids? The girls can have pampering time, where the girls can do their nails, put on a facial mask and pick out what they want to wear the next day. Most important, take time to be with your families and have fun. You are making memories they will always remember. And so will you.
