Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Wind Tower Project

December 3, contractors for the Wayne-Finger Lakes Board of Cooperative Education Services will begin the erection of an 80-foot tower and 10 KW Wind Turbine at their Wayne Technical and Career Center (WTCC) in Williamson.

The tower will supply electricity to the WTCC and allow staff to utilize the tower and turbine as an instructional tool. The WTCC wind turbine is the first project of its kind at a K-12 public school in New York State.

The WFL-BOCES has launched their New Vision Renewable Energy Program for students this past fall. The program which is the first in New York State provides students with a college-preparatory program that studies many different forms of renewable and alternative energy throughout the year, while earning up to 14 college credits.

The student-made Portable Energy Lab is a project that incorporates a complete working solar and wind installation. The lab was designed as an instructional tool for students of all ages and for the community. In addition to the technical working displays, various lessons and hands- on lab activities are being developed/ collected and organized to assist in the promotion and understanding of renewable energy resources. Having a wind turbine on campus will provide students with a hands-on tool for study.

The WTCC Campus recently underwent an $8.3 million addition and renovation project that was designed to achieve certification by the U.S. Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System (LEED). The campus is working with their architect and engineer, Beardsley Design Associates of Auburn to complete the necessary paperwork and documentation necessary to achieve LEED certification for the project.

The following is a list of some of the Williamson Campus LEED features.

  • CFC reduction
  • Geothermal heating and cooling system
  • 25% recycled building materials content
  • Low VOC emitting building materials
  • Stormwater management system designed to treat runoff
  • Daylighting views to decrease lighting requirements
  • Building systems commissioning
  • Provisions for alternative transportation and recyclable storage and collection
  • Use of over 20% locally manufactured materials
