

Nonprofits win grants totaling $46,700
Rochester Area Community Foundation and the Wayne County Community Endowment announce the award of 12 grants to organizations. The grants, which total $46,700, are from a variety of funds established specifically to benefit Wayne County citizens.
The checks will be presented to representatives of the organizations at a reception on December 6, 3:45 - 5 p.m. at the Reliant Community Credit Union located at 10 Benton Place in Sodus.

Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County will receive $3300. They uses volunteers to help improve the literacy skills of adults. This grant will go towards increasing outreach efforts to increase awareness of this service among Wayne County residents.

Scarlet Thread Ministries will get $2500. This grant was sought to support the continued operation of the Mill Street Youth Center in Sodus and the expansion of similar youth services to the Walworth Macedon Youth Project. These centers provide a safe area where 200-plus youth can find access to recreation, tutoring, and other services.

A $5000 grant goes to Wayne County Rural Health Network. The Network is a collaborative partnership of health and human services providers working together for the health and well-being of Wayne County residents. This funding will help cover the costs of providing dental care and services to at least 250 Clyde-Savannah students and the development of a Children's Health Fair that brings together local services and resources.

$2500 will go to Young Audiences of Rochester, whose mission is to use the arts for life-long learning. This program brings art-in-education learning forms to 21 classrooms at Norman R. Kelley Intermediate School (grades 3-4-5) in Newark School District. Various uses of musical, theatre and dance are used to help students learn math, writing and history.

Child Care Council, Inc. gets $5000. With this grant, the Council will expand their SPARK (sports, play, active recreation for kids) obesity prevention project from ages 3-5 to ages 3-12. This nationally recognized physical education program is provided to underserved child care providers in Wayne County.

Home Meal Service gets a grant of $3000 which will support the Meals-on-Wheels Program and the Sodus Nutrition center. Home Meal Service has served an average of 6349 dinners over the past 11 years and provided an average of 4295 free bags of food per year for the past nine years.

American Red Cross receives $5000. American Red Cross, Wayne County Chapter, is providing a Family Caregivers Program with the support of this grant. This program provides information to caregivers providing for loved ones information on a range of subjects including: healthy eating, home safety, legal and financial issues.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester gets $5000. This community-based mentoring program for at-risk youth involves matching youth with adult mentors to promote healthy decision making and skill attainment. This grant was sought to help increase the number of youth in the county that participate in the program.

Wayne County Rural Ministry receives $5000. This Rural Ministry helps people gain control over their lives by assisting them in identifying resources to meet their needs. Through the Heat/Rent Program supported by this grant, Wayne County families are provided with emergency financial assistance to pay their heat and rent.

A $5000 grant to Wayne ARC, which advocates for and serves persons of all ages with or without special needs. This grant provides funding to continue the Alzheimer's Respite Program. This program provides activities and care to Alzheimer individuals and allows caregivers a break from everyday care of a loved one.

Wayne County Historical Society wins a $4000 grant. The Society's mission is to educate local residents and visitors on Wayne County history with a special interest in youth programming. This grant supports a museum technology upgrade developed to attract more youth to the museum. Touch screens, holograms and informational DVDs will be used to convey important history of Wayne County.

Central Western New York Youth Basketball Clubs gets $1400 to assist boys and girls to participate in local and out-of -area basketball tournaments. This grant will support tournament fees and travel expenses for youth who would not otherwise be able to participate.
