Newark dance studio
presents 'Nutcracker'
at the Smith

The Nutcracker ballet will take the stage December 8 and 9, at Geneva's Smith Opera House.

About 100 people tried out for parts in this traditional holiday ballet. Phyllis Mouton of the Studio for the Performing Arts (Newark) says what makes this a special show is that it is a true collaboration. Her Studio's dancers are not the only ones performing; several dancers from other studios and other communities perform as well.

Mouton says, 'This ballet is more of a way to share what we love doing. We know there are several other performances of The Nutcracker ballet at this time of year, but ours is unique because we involve dancers from Newark, Clifton Springs, Phelps, Geneva, Shortsville, Clyde, Lyons and other areas.' and with their many hours of practice the 68 dancers, show great strength in their ability and talents.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. December 8 and 2:30 p.m. December 9. Tickets are available by calling the Smith at 315.781.5483. The ticket price $15 for adults, $10 students and senior citizens, $5 for children under 6.

The Studio for the Performing Arts is owned and operated by Phyllis Mouton, Heather Colletti and JoAnna Mott.

In September of 2006 the studio established a new ballet company which is directed by Heather Colletti. The studio is located at 1167 East Union St. in Newark and classes are also offered at the Phelps Community Center.

The Studio prides itself on giving their students a dance education that is age and ability appropriate, while sharing the love of their art - Dance. Classes are open to anyone ages two to adult.

The Nutcracker Ballet is based on the story, 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King' by E.T.A. Hoffman. In 1891, the legendary Russian choreographer Marius Petipa commissioned Tchaikovsky to write the music for The Nutcracker Ballet.

In 1892, the first showing of The Nutcracker took place at the Mariinsky Theatre of Russia, home of the Kirov Ballet. The Nutcracker made its way to Western Europe in the 1930's and to America by 1940, performed by Ballet Russe. The first American full-length Nutcracker was performed by the San Francisco Ballet, choreographed by W. Christensen. .
