Marion Fire Dept. wins grant

Rep. Jim Walsh announced that the Marion Volunteer Fire Department is to receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Marion Vol. Fire Department will receive $9738 as part of Fiscal Year 2007 funding secured by Walsh.

The Fire Department plans to use the funding to purchase a specialized washer for cleaning the firefighters turnout gear. This washer will not only keep their gear cleaner, but will help remove dangerous contaminants picked up during a fire that are hazardous to the health of the firefighters even after they have left the scene.

Walsh is a member of the Congressional Fire Caucus and is an original co-sponsor of the program's authorizing legislation. As Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on VA/HUD and Independent Agencies with former oversight over FEMA, Walsh was responsible for funding the FIRE program in its first three fiscal years of existence.

In 2004, Walsh was named the Congressional Fire Services Institute Legislator of the Year for his efforts in preserving the program.
