Happenings
By Carolyn Adriaansen (926.4436)

Ed Krocke, a former Marion resident, at the age of 89, has taped some of his boyhood adventures with his friends for our archives. His family lived on Shilling Road in Marion, and they walked to school in the Sweezy District #8 on the Newark Road. When the weather was stormy, Pete Lootens would hitch up a bob sleigh and take them to school; their Dad would get them after school. Later, the school had a single-axle Selbon Pacemaker bus with bench seats, with Ray Sweezey as their first bus driver.

Dec. 20, 1984 - Now that 12 more Indians have been discharged from the Cavalry, it is expected soon, after the first of the year, the US Army will be comprised exclusively of white men and Negroes.

December 24, 1942 - To save steel for the war, there will be no new license plates issued for 1943. Commissioner of Motor Vehicles advises to put a coat of varnish on your 1942 plates so they'll last another year.

'If we always break New Year's resolutions, why don't we resolve to gain weight and exercise less?'

Please get me news on your Christmas and holiday family events - (I don't have time to make it all myself!) Remember it has to be fit to print!

Beans are traditionally eaten on New Year's Day to bring luck. They are said to represent coins in the pocket.

You might like to try 'Hoppin' John' for New Year's Day dinner.

2 cups black-eyed peas
2 cups cooked rice
1 small onion, chopped
1 small bell pepper, chopped
garlic powder to taste

Heat the black-eyed peas and add the rice. Add remaining ingredients and cook an additional 10 to 15 minutes. Do not overcook. This dish is best if the bell pepper and onion still have a crunch to them. Serves 6 to 8.

December 20, 1939 - Coterie meetings are held in the Homemaking Hause every Monday during the eighth period and an evening meeting is held once a month. Two girls were awarded prizes giving the best name for the club. They were Frances Kennett an Dorothy Purdy.

Rog and Gen Adriaansen's granddaughter, Amy, of Burlington, North Carolina, is home for the holidays and spend a day with them last week. Her husband, Andy is in the Marines, somewhere near Kuwait.

'Finding happiness is much like trying to fall asleep. If you push too hard, it slips away. Learn to relax in your pursuit of this worthy goal.'

The Marion Senior citizens group met Dec. 18 at the Second Reformed Church on Mill St. Marion, for their Christmas luncheon and exchange of gifts. Luncheon meetings will resume in April.
