Fire destroys house at El-VI Farms
By John Zornow

At least five fire departments are fighting a wind-swept blaze at the home of Ted and Carol Peck at 502 Pelis Road, just outside of Newark.

The home, more than a century old, will probably be declared a total loss, as fierce winds, single-digit temperatures, along with frozen hydrants, hampered the efforts of volunteer firefighters.

Located just a few feet into Ontario County, the home of several generations of the Peck family was fully engulfed when Phelps Fire Department firefighters arrived on scene around 12:15 p.m. today, Feb. 5.

On the scene to assist Phelps were Clifton Springs, Port Gibson, Newark, and Marbletown volunteer fire departments. Fairville was called in to cover at the Newark hall, while Newark sent their aerial platform truck to Pelis Road.

Ted and Carol Peck were not home at the time of the devastating fire. They were at the hospital with family members, on the occasion of the birth of a new grandchild.
