'Rachel's Challenge' coming to NHS

Rachel's Challenge, a compelling, results-oriented program designed to inspire, instruct and enable students to bring positive changes in their lives and schools, will be presented at Newark High School February 15.

Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, the first student killed at Columbine High School in April 1999, will speak to Newark High School, Middle School and others at two assemblies and then later, to parents, community members and students that evening. The program was birthed from his daughter's kindness and compassion and the contents of her six diaries.

The district is hopeful many people from the community, from all walks of life, will attend the 7 p.m. program on Feb. 15: local government officials, Chamber of Commerce members, business people, members of the clergy.

Rachel's Challenge will not end with the student assemblies, but will be implemented in various ways into curriculum and events at the schools to emphasize and encourage ongoing participation in the five challenges. After the programs, various students at both schools will serve as ambassadors for Rachel's Challenge. Workshops and training programs will be held with students and staff February 16.
