Students visit Humane Society

The St. Michael School Science Club took a trip to the Wayne County Humane Society. Children toured the facility, handled some of the cats and learned the many reasons why animals are placed at the shelter.

The highlight of the trip was spending time in the veterinarian technician's examining room. Students watched as one cat's teeth were examined and another's ear was pin pricked for a blood sample.

The blood sample was for a glucose test to determine if the cat had diabetes. The students discovered it did based on an extremely high blood sugar reading on the Glucometer.

All the children took turns listening to the cat's heart beating through a stethoscope. The comical thing about this was that the veterinarian's technician had to get the cat to stop purring in order to hear the heart. To do this, she brought the cat over to a nearby faucet and turned it on.

Students watched as staff and volunteers held a dog securely to get a blood sample from his leg so that he could be checked for heart worms. Blood was dropped from a dropper into a test and after ten minutes, students learned that the dog would need treatment. A favorite activity for many of the students was examining heartworms under a microscope.
