Missing Sodus

Oh, my gosh, it was so nice to feel some warmth when we went outside this week. Not that 35 is a heat wave, but for us, it certainly is. Even with all of the snow we know that spring will be coming soon.

I hope everyone enjoyed Mardi Gras ('Fat Tuesday') and now Lent is upon us. Fat Tuesday falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. During the 46-day Lent period, many Christians forego the eating of meat, either completely or on Fridays. They also traditionally give up a favored food, drink, or habit. Fat Tuesday is a last-chance party excuse before a six-week period of abstinence.

The Sodus Library was happy to be reopened after all the nasty weather.

Thanks for your patience while we were closed, and remember that some of the roads are still quite icy - please continue to be careful out there.

  • February 26 - Preschool Story Hour, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
  • February 26 - Rock Painting Class 5, 10 a.m.-noon
  • February 28 - Underground Railroad Roundtable, 7 p.m.

To celebrate Black History Month, the Sodus Free Library will be hosting an Underground Railroad roundtable at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28th. There are many fascinating legends and stories about railroad activities in our area. If you've researched the subject, please come and share with us; if you'd like to learn more about the underground, come and learn with us. Local columnist Brooks Tenney has agreed to participate, as has Patricia Johns, whose Masters thesis included research on the topic. Stop by the Library at 17 Maple Avenue, or call 483.9292 for more information.

March 10 is the 2nd Annual Murder Mystery Dinner, a fund-raiser sponsored by the Lioness Club of Sodus. Tickets: $50 per person.

News from the Sodus Chamber:

Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the business world today. How can Sodus capitalize on this ever-expanding industry? Well, it all starts here in the community. Two Sodus Central graduates, Jonathon Witherhead (Class of 2005, Son of Derrick and Elizabeth Terry) and Jamie Beckans (Class of 2004, daughter of Julie and Mike Beckans), who are both currently students at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, will be giving a presentation on Sodus' Community Personality Profile.

In the fall of 2006, Jamie and Jonathon were given the task of creating a Community Personality Profile which was a requirement for their Tourism Planning and Development class. The Project encompasses the entire curriculum that they studied throughout the semester. Jamie and Jonathon used their existing knowledge about tourism, and then applied new concepts from their course, to develop the project. They broke the Project down into different parts.

First, Jamie and Jonathon delineated Sodus' Distinctive Features (aspects of the community that are unique to Sodus), and then they identified Critical Zones (major travel corridors and gathering areas within the community). Next, they examined the History and the Zoning of the town. Finally, the two determined Use Objectives (essentially individual action plans) for all of the Distinctive Features and Critical Zones. At the conclusion of the semester, they presented their findings to their fellow classmates, who also did similar projects on other communities in the area.

The presentation will be given at the March 1 meeting (Sodus WCTA) at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. Jamie and Jonathon are looking forward to sharing their findings with everyone at the meeting and promise it will be an eye-opening event that will show the potential Sodus possesses.

So, I hope everyone is surviving the school vacation week. This time of year, everyone, including the little ones, feel cooped up. You can only do so much in this much snow. A tad difficult to ride a bike in these conditions. Lots of good books to read, games and movies are a big help. Also big sheets of paper, crayons and coloring books are a lot of fun.

Spring is coming!
