Marion kids support United Way Six years ago, a first grader named Anna Mitchell had been greatly affected by a lesson she learned in school about needs and wants. She was alarmed that some people may not have enough food to eat or clothes to keep themselves warm. She wanted to sell all the presents she had made for Christmas and raise money for those in need. Thank you to the United Way of Greater Rochester for accepting our $750 to be designated to our Marion/Wayne County area. Something amazing happened. Anna and her friends... and their friends have created a silent auction. The first Saturday in December, they all meet at Anna's house and bring their handmade crafts and treasures to sell. Each year these items have grown with the children. The Ferreri family and the Bartlett family were among the charter members. Everyone was amazed with the dedication and quality of the handmade items. Not pictured: Mac and Bailey Cramer, Vincent Lucenti and a Homer Central Special Education Class. This year the group raised almost $750 for charity. When Anna realized the group was this close to this number, she compassionately went up to her 'secret stash' of tooth fairy/gift money and brought it down to make up the difference. She did so without prompting and with such sincerity. Mom had proud tears and Grampa was close. Pride beamed from Grandma and Dad. Each year, the United Way has graciously helped this group designate funds to support people in the area. Children saw a need and worked together to create a purposeful response. Love, dedication, respect and kindness shines each year as this amazing group comes back together (and grows) to help make our world a better place. The United Way was selected by the group because Anna's Grampa, David Mitchell, was fond of this organization. He helped Anna make the connections for donations. Generations continue to proudly work together. Each year, Grampa Dave sets up a time to deliver the funds and escorts the group to the United Way office to deliver the contributions. Copyright
