More transports for Sodus and Wolcott seniors

The Wayne County Department of Aging and Youth is expanding transportation services to both the Sodus and Wolcott Senior Centers. Transportation is currently available on Thursdays, but up to now, we have not been able to adequately reach seniors that live in outlying areas that are served by both these centers.

Our Department has contracted with WATS to provide transportation on Thursday to the Wolcott Senior Center located at the United Faith Methodist Church. WATS will be able to pick up and drop off seniors from Red Creek, Rose, Butler, South Butler, North Wolcott and Wolcott areas to attend the Wolcott Program.

Our van will still provide transportation to the Sodus Senior Center, located at Sodus Methodist Church on Thursdays. Our agency van would be able to pick up not only riders in Williamson and Sodus but also Sodus Point, Sodus Center, Alton and Wallington.

In addition to a great meal, both of these Centers also offer the free Bone Builders exercise program in cooperation with Wayne County Action Program's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Bone Builders aims to protect against fractures related to osteoporosis by increasing muscle strength and bone density.

Osteoporosis is a serious medical condition where bones become brittle and are easily broken. Trained volunteers lead the exercise sessions twice per week and participants perform a variety of exercises, standing or seated, using hand and ankle weights. You do not have to participate in the Bone Builder's program if you attend the site, but it is available to interested seniors.

We would like to get this new transportation endeavor under way as soon as possible. Anyone in these two locations wishing to attend the senior center is encouraged to call Debbie Hill, manager of the Wolcott Center at 594.1644 or Betty Mayou at the Sodus Center at 483.8362 to sign up for a ride and a meal.

Questions may also be directed to Susan Blair, Nutrition Coordinator at the Department of Aging and Youth at 946.5624.
