Jazz concert in Newark An upbeat evening of jazz featuring a well-known Rochester jazz quartet is planned at Newark High School January 13 at 8 p.m. The 16th annual Winter Jazz event will feature music by the Bill Tiberio Quartet. 'The quartet is a pretty well-recognized jazz staple in Rochester area venues,' said NHS instrumental music teacher and district music supervisor Dave Schwind. 'Bill is such a great teacher and is so great with students. Based on his demeanor and expertise, I think the group will be phenomenal at Winter Jazz.' In addition to being an accomplished and versatile saxophonist and woodwind player, Bill Tiberio has taught music at Fairport High School for 16 years. There, he conducts the Concert Band, two jazz ensembles, jazz combos, pit orchestras, chamber ensembles, and teaches woodwinds throughout the district. He is the former president of the New York State Chapter of the International Association of Jazz Educators, and is on the summer jazz faculty for the Eastman Community Music School high school program and the founder and director of the Hochstein School of Music summer jazz camp. He is also a regular faculty member for the Tritone Jazz Fantasy Camps, held in Rochester in the summer and is the founder and conductor of the Eastman Community Music School High School Chamber Winds. He was recently appointed to conduct the University of Rochester Wind Symphony. Tiberio is a frequent guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for both jazz and concert honor groups and festivals throughout New York. He is active in the Rochester music scene as a jazz saxophonist and woodwind player, and is comfortable with all styles of jazz from contemporary to Latin, and straight-ahead. Bill has performed with Fred Wesley, The Four Tops, the Temptations, Nestor Torres, Lou Gramm, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and has shared the stage with Chuck Loeb, the Yellowjackets, Eileen Ivers, Jesse Cook, and Euge Groove. He is a founding member of the original contemporary soul group, The Bill Welch Band and is the saxophonist in the Spiritus Christi Gospel Choir. Tiberio released his first CD on the Trier Record label in April 2003, 'the story ends...the story begins,' and was joined on the CD by guitarist Melvin Henderson, who produced the recording, organist Gerry Youngman, drummer Ted Poor, vocalist Harold Pannell, and Latin percussionist Tony Padilla. His second CD on the Trier Records label, entitled 'Promise Street' was released in January 2005. Bill is again collaborating with Paradigm Shift, who is receiving national recognition for their debut CD on Nagel-Heyer Records entitled 'Shifting Times,' which features Bill's saxophone artistry on several tunes. Besides performing a couple of solo numbers at Winter Jazz, Schwind said the quartet, that also features a guitar player, keyboardist, and a drummer, will perform with both the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Schwind and with Vocal Jazz, directed by NHS vocal music teacher Jean Bendix. In addition to performing at Winter Jazz, the quartet will also do some improvisational music clinics with student musicians January 12 and will perform at assemblies at Kelley School, the Middle School and at NHS Jan. 13. 'I think more student musicians will connect with this experience because it involves a group rather than just one musician,' Schwind said. Tickets for the concert are $5 and are only available at the door. Senior citizens who have a Golden Pass can attend for free. Anyone who has questions should call Schwind at 332.3200 #2251.
