Missing Sodus

It was a little chilly during the week, had to get out the bigger coats again. Last weekend, Eileen, Ralph and Betty were happy. It was in the mid- to high 80s in Florida. Eileen's mom, Betty, is recovering nicely from her hand surgery. And I found out an interesting thing - people in Florida have to make a winter garden of poinsettias, mums and other plants that can take colder temps. Their annuals die back. I didn't know that. I, for some reason, thought that once they planted their garden, it was forever.

I have been shown how to use my FLICKR account so I have spent days adding pretty pictures to it. I have all holidays and seasons and I have tossed in a couple of winter shots as well.

Mark your calendars: Beat the winter Blahs with the Blues at the 5th Annual Chili Blues Family Fest at Papa Joe's Restaurant in Sodus Point on Sunday, February 11 from 1 to 6. Sample assorted home-made chili's, breads, and a tasty Cajun Buffet. Enter your best chili in the GSBA Chili Blues Chili Contest! Hurry...only the first 10 entries will be accepted! Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3d place. KIDS! Enter the coloring contest while you're there. Advance Tickets are $15 and $5 for kids ages 5-13. Tickets at the Door are $18, and $7 for kids. Put some spice into winter at the Chili Blues Family Fest! Call 315.483.6391 for tickets & information, or visit

From the Sodus Free Library:

Rock Painting Classes

Shirley's popular house painting classes will be starting again soon. House as in 'rock,' that is. You can create your dream house, or store, (or library!), or whatever you'd like. Only a couple of spots remain available, so call or stop by the Library soon if you want to be included. Classes will be held on Monday mornings from 10 to noon (or so), starting January 22. We guarantee you'll have a rockin' good time!

Sarah Harper, an accomplished knitter, will be offering a beginner's class from 10 a.m.-noon, starting on Friday, January 12 (note change of day and time). There will be a small fee to help cover the cost of supplies. Call 483.9292 or stop by the Library to sign up or for more information.

Looking for a great book to share with a favorite young child or teen? Check out the list at the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books for the titles earning their 2006 Blue Ribbons. There are some terrific books on the list, including picture books, fiction, and non-fiction. Let us know which titles you'd like to read, and we'll help you place an OWWL Hold on them.

Not as much to do this time of year, though there are some fun things to keep everyone busy. Don't forget the libraries are a great source of knowledge and entertainment with lots of books, magazines and movies to choose from.

We only have February and March to deal with since it looks like January isn't going to be a nasty month either. Although, if seeing the sunshine makes you have the need to spring clean a tad early go right ahead and then, when spring comes, you'll be all done and can enjoy the outside. (I never really understood the theory of spring cleaning. Isn't that a lot of work to do all at once?) If the curtains are dusty now, wash them and it's really a good time to clean out those closets.

Have a good week, enjoy each other's company.
