New NCSD assistant superintendent

Greg KernThe director of financial services for the Medina School District has been hired by the Newark School Board as the new assistant superintendent for business.

By a unanimous vote January 24, Greg Kern was given a three-year probationary appointment to the position. He will begin here at the end of February.

He is replacing Robert N. Fogel Jr. who left the district in December to become the business manager at the Monroe I BOCES in Fairport.

Until Kern begins, on or about Feb. 25, Gene Gruber, who worked for several years as assistant superintendent for business here before Fogel began in 1996, will work as the interim superintendent for business.

'Greg's experience and interpersonal skills make him the right person to fill the position of assistant superintendent for business here,' Superintendent Robert Christmann said. 'We learned from many sources during our extensive reference checking what an outstanding business background Greg has, both in public schools and in the private sector.'

Final candidates for the assistant superintendent for business position were interviewed separately by community members, district office staff, administrators and a faculty representative as well as by the Board of Education. Kern's duties will include all district financial planning and oversight and direct supervision of the transportation, food service and custodial and maintenance services.

As director of financial services in Medina since 2003 Kern, of Lockport, has directed and supervised the planning and management of the business and financial services of the 2000-pupil school district. His other duties have included: Directing and supervising maintenance and custodial services for the districts buildings and grounds as well as the transportation and food services programs. Grant writing. Facilitating and monitoring school facility construction, renovation and or expansion projects. Before working in Medina, Kern was system office director of financial aid for Bryant & Stratton College in Buffalo. Other employment has included being a Small Business Administration loan officer in Niagara Falls for one year; being the controller/chief financial officer of the First Coast Technical Institute in St. Augustine, Florida for two years.

Kern earned his masters of science degree in education and school business at SUNY Brockport and his bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting at Niagara University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.
